South Huntington UFSD has partnered up with SUNY Stony Brook to bring the MEC 100 Engineering class into the High School. This program includes intro level physics then project based learning through the Snappy XO systems. This system run off the Arduino platform which is a low cost system to get the students building, programming and problem solving. This session will provide a first hand look at bringing this program to H.S. Students. We will go through the curriculum and working with the snappy system. In this program students are offered three college credits at a nominal cost through Stony Brook. The Snappy System is an open concept which allows students to build what is in their mind and not just what is in the directions. There are so many combinations to solve the problems that students are required to think, learn , and redesign. The open source platform of the arduino gives the students access to many low cost sensors, motors, and servos. Students need to have taken the Physics at least one year. The students at WWHS are receiving it really well. This class really lines itself with the Next Generation Standards. They will have to construct experiments and prove their thought process and develop arguments to prove their ideas. The Snappy system also allows students to design their own parts. Students have so much more at their fingertips than ever before in a classroom.
